Hon. Justice Ida Malosi and Pasifika Youth Elders of New Zealand Visit

Justice Malosi who served in the Samoa Judiciary as a Supreme Court Judge for 15 months visited Samoa with a group of Pasifika Youth Elders of the New Zealand Family Court. As a Family Court Judge for the Manukau Court in New Zealand, her visit with a group of Pasifika Youth Elders and lay advocates was an opportunity to experience and learn from the Samoa Family and Youth Courts. This visit is part of the upcoming Family and Youth Courts’ Workshop with the overall goal of “Empowering the Family Unit to Stop Violence” which will take place in November this year.

The group was welcomed by the Hon. Chief Justice of Samoa, Afioga Patu Tiavaasue Falefatu M. Sapolu in his keynote address followed by a reception with Members of the Judiciary and the Ministry of Justice. Schedule of events for their visit included an observation tour of the facilities at Olomanu Juvenile Centre, Non-Government Organizations and Groups such as Samoa Victims Support Group and Teen Challenge Samoa working in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice particularly, the Probation and Parole Services in providing rehabilitation programmes to help offenders reintegrate back into society.

One of the highlights of their visit was a consultation meeting with local Community Justice Supervisors comprised mainly of members of the clergy and village mayors, who provide their services on a voluntary basis to the Courts. The advent of the Community Justice Act 2008 and Young Offenders Act 2007 recognized formally the existing structures within our Samoan customs and tradition in the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders. This was an opportunity for local community leaders managing community based sentences and Youth elders from New Zealand to share and learn from each other’s experiences on the successes and challenges of the work they are doing.
